The Cypress Group

Our approach

Most advice comes from people with nothing at stake.

The problem

Small and mid-sized businesses are sold transactions. A loan from a banker paid on volume. A listing from a broker paid on closing. A software license from a rep paid on seats. Each one is fine on its own terms, and none of them is accountable for whether the company is better off a year later.

Nobody owns the outcome. The owner is left holding four partial answers and the job of stitching them together, usually at night, usually alone.

The model

Advise: we start with real work

First engagements are typically a fixed-scope data, systems, or marketing project delivered in under sixty days: small enough to be an easy yes, real enough to prove the model. We do that work first and let it speak. If we cannot make a company measurably better in that window, nothing that follows deserves to happen.

Invest: we buy in or earn in

Where the fit is right, we take a minority position alongside a strong operator. Sometimes we write a check for growth capital. Sometimes equity is earned against value we have already delivered. Either way our money sits where our advice does, and we stop being a line item on the expense sheet.

Operate: we build alongside

Then comes the unglamorous compounding work. Systems that hold. Marketing that produces a calendar of appointments. Hiring that does not undo itself in six months. Banking relationships built before they are needed. This is the part most firms leave to the owner, and it is the part that decides how the decade goes.

Who it's for

Privately-held Mississippi companies, roughly one million to fifty million dollars in revenue, run by owners who want a partner rather than a vendor. Businesses with real customers, real crews, and a ceiling they can feel but have not yet named.

And who it is not for

Companies looking for a silent check, or a one-off transaction, or a report to put in a drawer. We work in a small number of businesses at a time, and we work in them closely. If that sounds like too much company, we are the wrong firm.
